Job Description: Drill Helper
FSLA: Nonexempt
Reports to: Driller and Job Foreman

Summary
Assists driller in drilling operations including surface and underground core, and underground RC by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Includes the following and other duties as may be assigned:

  • Moving drill from one setup to another
  • Setting up of drill, decking and other related equipment
  • Setting casing
  • Mixing drill mud
  • Handling drill rods and core tubes
  • Handling core – removing from tube, placing in core boxes, labeling boxes
  • Handling chip trays and sample bags, proper marking of samples
  • Assisting with equipment maintenance and repair
  • Cleaning equipment and keeping work area clean and free of debris
  • Maintaining water source or source of lubricants (i.e. water lines and supply pumps)
  • Hauling supplies and equipment
  • Using tools, equipment and machinery including pickups, vans, water trucks, tractors, skidders, forklifts, pipe wrenches, fall protection systems and other safety equipment in compliance with state and federal regulations

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or related experience and/or certified training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Ability

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to speak clearly to others and understand directions given.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions and directions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations and Equipment

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have current MSHA training
  • Current drivers license
  • Necessary personal protection equipment (PPE) as required in Connors Employee Handbook

While performing the duties of this job:

  • The employee is regularly required to stand, bend and twist, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, talk or hear, and reach above the shoulder with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk and sit.
  • The employee regularly performs repetitive work involving use of hands and wrists.
  • The employee is frequently required to walk on uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • The employee must frequently (3-6 times/hour) lift and/or move 40 to 70 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Good eye-to-hand coordination is essential.

  • While performing duties of this job:
    • The employee may be exposed to high precarious places.
    • The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
    • The employee is regularly required to climb a ladder.
    • The employee is required to wear and use the proper safety equipment, including respiratory protection, and techniques to insure the employee’s safety and safety of others.
    • The employee is occasionally exposed to caustic chemicals and vibration.
    • The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
    • The employee may be exposed to hazards inherent to underground mining.
    • The employee may work in extremely hot or extremely cold environmental conditions.
    • The employee is regularly required to work 12-hour shifts for up to 30 days at a time.
    • The employee may be required to live in remote “camp” environments with limited communications.
    • The employee may be required to fly in airplanes and helicopters
